Portable Pull-Up Rack Buyer’s Guide: Is the Gravity Portable Pull-Up Rack Right for You?

Portable Pull-Up Rack Buyer’s Guide: Is the Gravity Portable Pull-Up Rack Right for You?

If you want to train calisthenics at home, one of the first questions is where are you going to do pull-ups?

Doorway bars and wall-mounted rigs work, but they come with compromises. That’s why the Gravity Fitness Portable Pull-Up Rack has become one of our best-sellers. It’s designed to give you a full bodyweight training setup anywhere, without needing anything permanent. And we now offer an extension kit!

This guide explains how the rack works, where and how you can use it, and whether you need the extension kit.

What is the Gravity Portable Pull-Up Rack?

The Gravity Portable Pull-Up Rack is a fully portable bodyweight training station designed for calisthenics and functional fitness. It provides a stable structure for pull-ups, dips, core work (and much more) and it can be packed away in minutes.

It only weighs 19kgs, and it comes with a carry bag so once you pack it down it can store away in a small space. No wall installation or ceiling anchors needed. This rack stands alone wherever you want to put it.

Why choose a portable pull-up rack over other pull-up bars?

Pull up racks and bars are affordable and easy to install, but they often restrict full body movement and limit what you can do, and some need drilling into walls (not great unless everyone in the building is on board!)

A portable pull-up rack gives you full-body training range, wherever you want. Indoors, outdoors, at the gym, in the garden. For many people, it’s the simplest way to get a complete home calisthenics setup.

Where can you use a portable pull-up rack?

One of the biggest advantages of the rack is its flexibility. You can set it up indoors, in your garden or patio, in a garage gym, in any outdoor training space, or even at a commercial gym with permission.

It packs down into a carry bag and literally takes minutes to set up and take down. It’s a great solution for people who rent (or just don’t want to drill into their own walls), or who want a portable piece of equipment.

How easy is the portable pull-up rack to use?

Ease of use is one of the main reasons athletes choose our Portable Pull Up Rack. You don’t need any tools at all. The rack uses a slot-and-lock system, so everything you need is already in the bag, and set up/break down takes minutes. The whole thing fits neatly into the bag it comes in.

It’s designed to be portable, so there might be a small amount of sway during use, but this doesn’t affect performance.

Best exercises to do on the Gravity Portable Pull-Up Rack

This rack is much more than a pull up bar. You can move it around and rest it on its side too. Here are just some of the exercises you can do on it.

Upper body

  • Pull-ups and chin-ups

  • Dips

  • Incline push-ups

  • Front lever progressions

  • Back lever progressions

Core

  • Hanging knee raises

  • Hanging leg raises

  • L-sit holds

The bar width is generous (116cm), so you can also do wide-grip and varied pull-up training. And you can add resistance bands and gymnastics rings to unlock more movements.

Should you add the extension kit?

We created the Portable Pull Up Rack Extension Kit as a direct result of customer feedback. It raises the rack height to 2.2 metres, unlocking additional movements and improving stability. It also increases the maximum user weight to 200kg. The extra height also makes the rack feel more like a traditional calisthenics rig.

Adding the extension kit allows you to do calisthenics movements that require a higher bar, like dead hangs, strict pull ups (if you’re tall), muscle ups, and advanced lever work.

The extension kit for the portable pull up rack isn’t necessary for everyone. The standard version without the extension works great for pull ups, dips, leg raises, rows and more. So if you mostly train basic or intermediate cali movements, the standard rack is probably enough.

How to choose: Portable Pull Up Rack only or add the Extension Kit?

If you’re deciding whether to add the extension kit, ask yourself:

  • Am I tall enough that standard pull-ups feel cramped?

  • Do I want to train muscle-ups?

  • Do I plan to progress into advanced skills?

If the answer is yes, the extension kit is a worthwhile addition.

Colour options: black or yellow

The extension kit is available in matte black or the original Gravity yellow. We brought the yellow version back after strong feedback from the community. Lots of you love the yellow!

Apart from colour, the product is identical.

Performance is identical. It’s simply a question of style.
